I am a licensed Couple and Family Therapist in Maryland with over 20 years of clinical, teaching, mentoring, and research experience. I am passionate about helping my clients heal from traumas and difficult life experiences, including childhood adversities and relationship aggression. I understand these experiences can be extremely painful and lonely, and profoundly impact us. Carl Jung once said, “I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become.” Similarly, I firmly believe that while traumas and adversities impact us, they do not have to define us. Given the right support, we have limitless potential to be the best version of ourselves. As a therapist, I endeavor to help my clients on their healing journey and to overcome their pain and suffering. I am warm, compassionate, culturally attuned, and authentic. In addition to talk therapy, I integrate body-centered therapies in my work.
I am currently an Associate Professor at University of Maryland where I teach undergraduate and graduate level courses. I am also deeply engaged in clinical research where I work with national and international populations to develop and test programs/treatments that address the relationship between trauma, relational wellbeing, and health outcomes. My work has been published and cited in leading journals.

I do not believe that therapy is “one size fits all”. My approach to therapy is very integrative and humanistic in that I use a variety of techniques/mediums that will fit the situation and people involved. In making sure that each session is tailored to your needs, collaboration is key to the therapeutic success. You are the expert in your life and I am your facilitator of self understanding. Together, we can achieve insight needed to achieve your goals and tackle what is in front of you. I take pride in being able to empower clients to create meaningful experiences, foster change, build their sense of resiliency, and also sustain a balanced lifestyle/outlook.
I take a very personable approach to therapy and will create a non-judgemental atmosphere filled with positivity and encouragement to challenge my clients to utilize their strengths in order to overcome challenges. There may be other factors in your life that tells you what you “should be” doing but navigating your needs and what you want to see in yourself and/or relationship is what takes priority in the therapeutic setting. Whether it be day to day challenges, processing past issues, or moving forward towards positive changes, I am here to help strengthen and enhance. I am married and have two kiddos. When I’m not going on family adventures or kickboxing, I am trying new restaurants with my husband, rough and tumbling a 5-year old Spiderman, or using my dance training to share the love of movement with my Princess.

As an individual and family therapist, I am comfortable assisting clients through some of the most serious crises including drug addiction, self-injury, emotionally and physically abusive relationships, grief/loss, separation and divorce. I also work with clients to address issues involving difficult life transitions, behavioral concerns, and academic performance particularly working with children and adolescents. As a couple therapist, I work with intention to encourage couples to explore their styles and patterns of communication as well as their roles and expectations–whether you are dating, engaged, married, or contemplating the status of your current relationship. I strive to connect with every member involved in the therapeutic process in order for everyone to be acknowledged, heard, and understood. It is my hope that regardless of my clients’ interest and reasoning for pursuing therapy, they achieve personal and relational growth, and see and understand both themselves and others more clearly.
I consider myself an easy-going, interactive, and accepting therapist who provides a collaborative approach. I explore all concerns, meeting you where you are, and offer a safe and peaceful space to assist families of all sorts and sizes. I am a creative listener who hears my clients’ concerns and then helps them to think differently about them. I love working with clients to look for change, to appreciate what is working and to be more connected with others in their lives. No matter what one is struggling with, there is solution or something to deeply appreciate. I am honored by all the clients that have shared their struggles with me and allowed me to help them be healthier or more centered in their lives. I am fluent in Brazilian Portuguese but love working with clients from all backgrounds. I have been married for 20 years and have two children (a teenager and a tween). I have successfully used “Love and Logic” techniques for raising my own children and in my practice.
I have been treating individuals, couples and families in both Florida and Maryland for the past 18 years in a variety of settings, including private practice, church, school, and hospitals (inpatient and outpatient populations). I have worked with clients challenged by a wide variety of issues across the lifespan.
One of my deepest beliefs is the importance of keeping up with the newest research to provide clients with therapy that is both effective and efficient. I am particularly passionate about my work with couples, adolescent girls, and those going through divorce or separation.

Janine Joly-DeMars is currently accepting new clients for both in-person and virtual sessions in the Bethesda office
My client-centered, strength-based approach empowers and motivates my clients to direct the pace and trajectory of therapy. I assist my clients with identifying their goals for treatment, as well as the constraints preventing them from achieving them. As the therapeutic process unfolds, we work together to determine how to remove the constraints—and sometimes explore how they got there in first place. I am knowledgeable about and comfortable with a wide range of family therapy models and interventions, all of which offer useful tools for understanding how problems originate, as well as how to effect positive change here and now.
Conducting therapy is an exercise in curiosity, but it is not a difficult exercise because people and their relationships are fascinating to me. I believe that hearing each new client’s story is a sacred privilege, and I am blessed to be allowed to perform it. The resilience, resourcefulness, and capacity for affection evident in each person, couple, and family that enters my office never fail to impress me. When I am not at work, I try to care for my mind, body, and spirit, which generally takes the form of cooking, eating, and watching YouTube videos with my husband.

I believe fervently in the equality of all genders, cultural identities, physical appearances, abilities, neurological types, and lifestyles. Each client is the expert on their experiences and the captain of their ship. I am not the therapist staring across a desk over horn-rimmed glasses. I am the navigator who can help you get where you want to go.
For more than 30 years I have dedicated my career to observing and understanding the diversity of human beings, first as an Anthropology graduate from Columbia University, then as a journalist working and living in a dozen Asian and Middle Eastern countries. I have cultural sensitivity with regard to concepts of race, gender, and religious traditions including Christianity, Islam, Buddhism and Judaism, and the cultures, histories and lifeways of Latin America, East, Southeast and Southern Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

You will find me enthusiastic, good-natured and engaged in your life story. Whether you are a couple or individual, I seek first to empathize and to understand, to affirm you and to help you identify your secret strengths. I will ask you the tough questions, explain the biological and psychological functioning of the human mind, and help you look for answers in the corridors of your life.
I want to help you spot the patterns in your communication, behavior and relationships that brought you to my office, and work with you to replace them with new patterns and chart a course to the future you want to embody.
